Skincare for Teenagers: Where to Start

Skincare for Teenagers: Where to Start

Teenage skin is going through a lot. Hormones shift, oil production ramps up, and suddenly skincare feels like something you are supposed to have figured out. Add the endless advice on social media, much of it selling products young skin does not need, and it is no wonder so many teens and parents feel confused. The reassuring truth is that good teenage skincare is simple, gentle and inexpensive. Here is where to start.

Keep It Simple: Three Steps Is Plenty

Young skin does not need a shelf of serums. In fact, doing too much often causes more harm than good. A gentle three step routine covers everything most teenagers need:

  • A gentle cleanser morning and night to remove oil, sweat and grime without stripping the skin.
  • A light, oil free moisturiser to keep skin balanced. Yes, even oily and breakout prone skin needs moisture.
  • A non greasy SPF 30 or higher every morning to protect skin from the sun.

That really is enough. This gentle approach is the same one we recommend to adults in our simple skincare routine for naturally glowing skin, just pared back to the essentials for younger skin.

Be Gentle, Always

The biggest mistake with teenage skin is being too harsh with it. Scrubbing hard, using strong products or washing constantly can strip the skin’s natural barrier, leaving it irritated and, frustratingly, oilier as it tries to recover. Choose a soft, pH balanced cleanser, use lukewarm water, and pat the skin dry rather than rubbing. Kindness works far better than force. It also helps to keep other everyday habits in mind: change pillowcases regularly, try not to touch the face too much through the day, and clean phone screens now and then, since all of these quietly transfer oil and bacteria onto the skin. None of it needs to be perfect, and small, consistent choices make the biggest difference over time.

Skip the Anti Ageing Trends

Much of what trends online is completely wrong for young skin. Retinol, potent acids, peptides and anti ageing products are not designed for teenagers and can genuinely damage a young skin barrier. Teenage skin does not need anti ageing anything. It needs gentle cleansing, light hydration and sun protection. If a product promises to fight wrinkles, it is not for a teen.

A Word on Breakouts

Occasional breakouts are a normal part of growing up and not a sign anyone is doing something wrong. Resist the urge to pick, keep the routine gentle and consistent, and give it time. If breakouts are painful, widespread or causing real distress, it is worth seeing a GP or dermatologist rather than reaching for ever stronger products. Persistent, angry skin is a medical matter, not a willpower one.

Build Good Habits Early

The habits formed now, especially daily sunscreen, pay off for a lifetime. Establishing a calm, consistent routine as a teenager sets skin up beautifully for the years ahead, and takes the drama out of skincare before it ever begins.

A Gentle Start, With a Little Guidance

Every young person’s skin is different, and it can help enormously to have someone friendly explain what to use and what to ignore. A little one-on-one skin chat is a lovely, pressure free way for a teenager to learn about their own skin and walk away with a simple plan that actually suits them. It is one of the kindest confidence boosts you can give.

Looking after your skin early is a habit that grows with you. Whether it stays a simple daily routine or one day becomes part of preparing for a special occasion, such as our guide to prepping your skin before your wedding day, it all begins here. If you would like a hand getting started, say hello.

And if a school formal is on the horizon, our formal makeup guide for students and parents picks up right where good skincare leaves off.
